What is a virtual number?

This term is used in many different scenarios and it can be hard to know what you need and what you are signing up to.  A virtual number is typically considered as a “landline” telephone number that rings “in the cloud”. However, in the cloud simply means calls route over the internet rather than via wires like traditional phone lines do.

For Cloud9, a virtual number is a “landline” number with a local area code that is simply routed to an existing number such as your mobile phone.

For the wider community it could also refer to a Voice over IP (VoIP) phone whereby calls are answered via a handset, pc/desktop client or smart phone app. This option will allow you to also make outbound calls from your business number. What about freephone or 03 numbers?

Freephone and other 03 area codes are Non Geographical Numbers, often referred to as NGNs. They work in a very similar way to Virtual Numbers, in that they ring directly to an alternative number such as your phone system or mobile phone.

How much does a virtual number cost?

A virtual number is £5 per month plus incoming call charges. Service charges are payable in advance and call charges in arrears by direct debit.

If your virtual number rings to an alternative landline number, incoming calls are charged at 4.5ppm (pence per minute).

If your virtual number rings to your mobile phone, incoming calls are charged at 6ppm.

All prices exclude VAT.

What if my needs change in the future?

Our contracts are a 12 month duration, however, if you outgrow your virtual number we offer customers the opportunity to move over to our VoIP telephony solution with only 30 days notice.
